Land Acknowlegement

Every community owes its existence and vitality to generations from around the world who contribute their hopes, dreams and energy to making the history that led to this moment. Some were brought here against their will. Some were drawn to leave their distant homes in hopes of a better life. And some have lived on this land for more generations than can be counted.

Truth and acknowledgment are critical to building mutual respect and connection across barriers of heritage and difference. We begin this effort to acknowledge what has been buried by honoring the truth.

We are located on the ancestral lands of the Salish people, including the Nooksack, Lummi and Semiahmoo, and we pay respect to Elders past and present. We recognize that these people cared for and stewarded this land for generations prior to our arrival.

We recognize that land acknowledgment is but a first step. We will continue to move beyond it by asking questions such as the ones below, and hope that you will join us in reflecting on these and beyond:

  • What is the history of the indigenous land I occupy?

  • What are the many legacies of violence, displacement, migration and settlement that bring us all here to this moment today?

  • Who are the indigenous people who currently live in my community?

  • Are there other ways I can build awareness and contribute?
